Two new Black Belts for Melbourne Hapkido Centre
On 2 December 2007 two Melbourne Hapkido students travelled to Sydney and were successful in earning their first-degree black belt at the grading conducted by Australian Hapkido Association president Master Kevin Brown.
Denis Bunag and Robert Graham had both trained extremely hard for the event, each of them working toward this goal for over 5 years.
Their hard work paid off with both of them showing excellent technique and attitude at the grading, showing themselves as great representatives of Melbourne Hapkido Centre.
They now become part of a very exclusive, but growing community, of Hapkido Black Belts in Melbourne. Also a group of Melbourne club members travelled all the way to Sydney to support them at their grading — demonstrating what real "club spirit" is all about.
All of us at Melbourne Hapkido would like to congratulate Dennis & Rob on reaching this important milestone and for their contribution to the club over the years.
Well done!

First Gong Kwon Club for Australia!
On a recent trip to Korea, Vincent Bacon, principal instructor for Melbourne Hapkido became the first Australian to be accredited as a Black Belt Instructor in Gong Kwon Yu Sul.
See pictures from the visit!
First experiencing the art while he acted as host for the visiting Gong Kwon Masters during their Australian tour in April this year, he was invited to Korea to continue his progress in this amazing martial art style by the arts founder Master Kang.
After completing an intensive course of training at the Gong Kwon Yu Sul headquarters in Seoul on 15th September 2007, Vincent is now the first Australian, and one of the very first non-Koreans in the world, to be trained to the level of Black Belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul. Melbourne Hapkido instructor Debbie Martin also participated in the challenging Gong Kwon training in Korea.
Melbourne Hapkido Centre now becomes the latest member of a very exclusive club: the only the place in the English-speaking world one can learn this exciting, effective & truly 21st century Martial art.

Thai Boxing Training in Thailand
Recently returning from an extended overseas trip, instructors Vincent Bacon and Debbie Martin got a "taste of Thai" — spending some time at the famous Lanna Muay Thai Camp in Chaing Mai, Northern Thailand.
Run by expatriate Scot Andy Thomson, Lanna Muay Thai is in the very top echelon of camps in Thailand with a regular stable of fighters from all backgrounds and nationalities competing at local and national level. Such is the reputation of the camp there is always a large number of Non-Thais at training sessions, who like ourselves, travel from half-way around the world just for the privilege of experiencing authentic Muay Thai training under the expert guidance of Andy and his trainers.
See pictures from the visit!
Training was 2 hours training in the early morning and a further 3 hours every evening. Coupled with the humidity of an outdoor gym in Northern Thailand it was certainly a physically demanding experience but also was immensely rewarding.
Complete Martial Arts Instructors and students are now planning regular visits to this fantastic gym, which not only provides great martial arts experience but also happens to be located in one of the most pleasant and exotic places on the planet!
We would recommend Lanna Muay Thai to any martial artist in this part of the world interested in getting a taste of what its like to "Train like a Thai".
A big to thanks to Andy and his team of trainers in making us feel welcome and passing on their expert knowledge of Muay Thai.
